The Barbary lion, once the king of North Africa, was the largest lion subspecies, with males sporting dark, heavy manes. Revered as symbols of power, they were kept by royalty, including at the Tower of London. Sadly, they went extinct in the wild by the 1940s, with the last known lions shot in Morocco’s Atlas Mountains.
