On February 2, 1925, Balto arrived in Nome after braving 53 miles of blizzard conditions, in temperatures that reached below 40 degrees, to stop a deadly diphtheria epidemic in Nome, Alaska. This bronze statue of Balto in Central Park was dedicated in his honor later that year.
