Bartmann jugs also know as “Bellarmine jug” are a form of stoneware pottery that were made in Cologne Germany from the 16th to 17th century. These salt glazed vessels commonly depict a bearded face like the one discovered in this colonial pit. This jug would likely have other decorations adorning it, including a seal in the middle that likely represented the area it was made. Bartman jugs have a deep history and would come in all sorts of shapes and sizes for use as storage vessels for food and
